Manotick grew up around a mill on the Rideau River, and the river remains its defining feature. The name is commonly said to come from an Algonquin word meaning island. The village was established in 1864, and it still has the scale and pace of a small town even though it is part of the City of Ottawa.

Living in Manotick

Watson’s Mill, a working flour mill from the 1860s now run as a museum, is the village’s signature landmark. Dickinson Square and the village main street gather independent shops, restaurants and services close to the water. The Rideau River here is part of the Rideau Canal waterway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Long Island Locks lie just north of the village.

For many residents the appeal is simple: quiet streets, space, and the river for paddling, boating and walking, within reach of the city.

Homes in Manotick

Manotick offers a different kind of property from the city core. Older village homes sit near the centre, newer subdivisions extend the village, and larger custom houses on generous lots are found on the water and in the surrounding countryside. Rural estate properties nearby give buyers acreage and privacy. For a wider look at where luxury homes are found in Ottawa, see Ottawa luxury homes.

Waterfront and rural homes come with their own questions. Floodplain and shoreline development rules are overseen by the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority. Because the Rideau River at Manotick is part of the Rideau Canal, Parks Canada also issues permits for docks and other in-water work. Both can affect what you may build or change. Some rural properties use private wells and septic systems, which call for specific inspections and documents. Speak to your lawyer and your inspector early, and ask for what applies to the address you are considering.

Getting around Manotick

Manotick is a car-based community. Prince of Wales Drive follows the Rideau River through Barrhaven toward the village, and the drive to central Ottawa takes longer than from the inner neighbourhoods. Public transit is more limited than in the urban core, so check OC Transpo for routes serving a particular address.

Who Manotick suits

Manotick suits buyers who want space, water and quiet while staying within Ottawa, who work from home, or who value a village centre. If you need to commute daily to a downtown office, or you want everything within walking distance, a central neighbourhood such as the Glebe or New Edinburgh may fit better.

This guide is general information about the area, not legal, financial or planning advice. Rules, services and transit change, so confirm details with the City of Ottawa, OC Transpo and the relevant school board before you decide.
